A Zen Shiatsu Treatment
A Zen Shiatsu treatment is traditionally given on a futon on the floor. While there are some practitioners who have converted shiatsu to the table or chair, Lucy Marsh, Dipl. ABT (NCCAOM) is trained in the traditional style of working on the floor.
The client remains fully clothed and no oils are used. Loose comfortable clothing of natural fibers is recommended. The pressure in Zen Shiatsu is gentle but deep. While there may be certain meridians or points that are tender with pressure, the treatment doesn’t need to be painful. Let the practitioner know if you experience pain so that the pressure can be adjusted.
During the first visit, you will go through an intake process to identify your goals and clarify your chief complaint. Depending on your goals, this process can be either thorough or brief. (These forms are available online if you would like to fill them out ahead of time.) The first session is often scheduled for an additional 15 minutes at no extra cost to the client to allow time for this process. Subsequent visits include a brief check in at the start to follow the progress between sessions.
Depending on the length of time symptoms or a condition has existed, the number of treatments needed will vary. In some cases one treatment will be enough. For most chronic conditions, symptoms and their underlying causes can be treated in four to ten treatments. |
